How We Research

Updated on

Every guide here starts with one question: will this fryer suit the person who is shopping for it? For deep fryers, that depends on what you cook, how many people you feed and where the fryer will sit.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your kitchen or your yard

Fries for two, wings for a game day crowd and a holiday turkey all call for different fryers.

An electric fryer lives on a counter near an outlet. A propane fryer is built for the backyard, so your space matters as much as the cooker.

2. We compare the details makers publish

We look at oil capacity, basket size and number, power or burner output, filtration, lids, cords, parts that come apart for cleaning, and the turkey weight a maker lists.

Hamilton Beach, Presto, T-fal, Masterbuilt and Char-Broil describe their fryers in their own words. We name the brand whenever we repeat a claim, and we note the warranty it lists.

3. We read what buyers report

We read buyer feedback and look for patterns. Common ones are oil that leaks, baskets that are too small, lids that drip, cords that are short and parts that are hard to wash.

One angry review doesn't sink a fryer. A repeated problem does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A fryer that's great for one cook may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages current

Fryers change, and some disappear from stores. Makers also sell look-alike models with similar names, so we check each model name and link only to new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any fryer with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes too.

What our picks are not

Our reviews are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every fryer we write about.

Hot oil can cause serious burns and fires. We point you to the maker's manual and don't give our own oil amounts or temperatures.

Propane fryers are for outdoor use only, never on a wooden deck, in a garage or under an overhang.

A turkey must be fully thawed and dry before it goes into hot oil. We make no promise that any fryer is safe, and we don't call any fryer healthier.
